The Thirsty Dog – Prague 1993

1990s, Czech Republic, Photography, Prague

Just heard a podcast about Prague in the early 1990’s. So many memories of the city and the atmosphere at that time. The Czech Republic had just split from Czechoslovakia and I had the feeling that it was going to be an interesting time and wanted to be a part of it.

Here is a photo I took in the Thirsty Dog in May 1993. It was coming up to the end of term working with London School in Belgicka and about to take off to summer camp. In the photo is an Irish guy called Kieran O’Sullivan, a Scottish guy called Davy, two Norwegian guys and I think the guy on the far left was German. After drinking there, we headed to Repre Club downstairs for a long night until 6am when it would close and we could get the metro home. The song I remember that was always played was “Loser” by Beck.

And no, I didn’t meet Nick Cave.

Red Alert

Achill, Ireland

It’s been stormy the whole Christmas period from a very bumpy landing at Dublin airport to being without electricity most of Christmas Eve. Tonight looks like being the worst of it. Winds are blowing like hell at the moment and it’s much worse in other parts of Ireland.
Happy Christmas!

At times like this, one needs a great weather app. All of the obvious and most reviewed ones are pretty useless when it comes to showing the forecast for wind. So after trying all of the top ones, I downloaded yr.no. Quite brilliant for showing predicted wind speeds and directions. The only quibble is that the meteorological forecast is in Norwegian.

Riga Airport

Bern, Helsinki, Switzerland, Travel

In transit between Helsinki and Bern. Grey day outside. Riga has a small but functional airport. Found a nice cafe with a spare power socket. Free wifi but it keeps showing adverts every second minute.

Air Baltic seem like the Ryanair of Northern Europe. Sneaky charges for checking in and a couple of staff who have horrible customer service skills. Can’t forget that horrible woman in at the check-in in Vilnius airport that I dealt with a couple of years ago. It was by far the worst checkin experience I have had so far.
