Live Mesh

Tech, Web

I’ve only just heard about this. Live Mesh looks very exciting as a way of keeping your own data local but being able to access it in a variety of ways.

A key design goal of the Live Mesh data synchronization platform is to allow customers to retain the ownership of their data that is implicit with local storage while improving on the anywhere access appeal of the web. The evolution of the web as a combined experience and storage platform is increasingly forcing customers to choose between the advantages of local storage (privacy, price, performance and applications) and the browser’s implicit promise of data durability, anywhere access and in many cases, easy sharing. A side effect of the competition to store customer data in the cloud and display it in a web browser is the fragmentation of that data and subsequent loss of ownership. Individual sites like Spaces, Flickr and Facebook make sharing easy, provided the people you are sharing with also use the same site. It is in fact very difficult to share across sites and equally difficult to work on the same data across the PC, mobile and web tiers.

Web 2.0 fails to produce cash

Tech, Web

From the FT

The shortage of revenue among social networks, blogs and other “social media” sites that put user-generated content and communications at their core has persisted despite more than four years of experimentation aimed at turning such sites into money-makers. Together with the US economic downturn and a shortage of initial public offerings, the failure has damped the mood in internet start-up circles.

Stuff White People Like

Thought Provoking, Web

Stuff White People Like, more like Stuff White American People Like is terrifically funny if you have any understanding about American culture (which most people do through television or cinema).

It is a known fact that white people believe that they can bring spring early by wearing a pair of shorts on any day that is above seasonal temperatures. This myth runs so deep that they will often wear shorts the following day when temperatures drop, at which point they will refuse to recognize that it is cold.

When you encounter a cold white person in shorts it’s best to say “I can’t wait until it’s warm enough to go windsurfing.” They will likely give you a high five.

TripIt is awesome

Tech, Travel, Web

Brilliant tip from Joel on Software about a new travel service called TripIt. I just tried it myself and the only issue I can see is that it doesn’t show dates in non-US format. I was surprised that it managed to parse a pdf attachment from Lufthansa and get all of the details right.

Joel explains very succinctly how it works.

It’s kind of magical. You don’t have to fill out lots of little fields with all the details, because they’ve done a lot of work to parse those confirmation emails correctly… it worked flawlessly for my upcoming trip to Japan.

opening up the eee pc

Tech, Web

Just read this great article
from the Download Squad about enabling full desktop mode on the eee pc. I was initially looking at installing mysql, php and apache and using it for web development and came across the website. Very easy to understand for someone who has never used linux before but it gives me an appetite to really dig in and discover what this baby has to offer.
