The Thirsty Dog – Prague 1993

1990s, Czech Republic, Photography, Prague

Just heard a podcast about Prague in the early 1990’s. So many memories of the city and the atmosphere at that time. The Czech Republic had just split from Czechoslovakia and I had the feeling that it was going to be an interesting time and wanted to be a part of it.

Here is a photo I took in the Thirsty Dog in May 1993. It was coming up to the end of term working with London School in Belgicka and about to take off to summer camp. In the photo is an Irish guy called Kieran O’Sullivan, a Scottish guy called Davy, two Norwegian guys and I think the guy on the far left was German. After drinking there, we headed to Repre Club downstairs for a long night until 6am when it would close and we could get the metro home. The song I remember that was always played was “Loser” by Beck.

And no, I didn’t meet Nick Cave.

All I Do

Music

Have you ever had a song that you couldn’t name? I was at a jazz soul concert in Tallinn months ago and the band played one song that I had known before but hadn’t known the artist of the name of the song. At the time I took a short video of the song but couldn’t make out the lyrics or the name of the song. I lacked the foresight to go up to the band and ask the name of the song at the time. It was only when I was reviewing the photos and videos from the trip that I came across the song again and listened to the video .

I listened to the lyrics and thought they sounded in the following order:

Loving without you

Living without you

Then again, it was sung by non-English native speakers but I thought such a great song couldn’t be that hidden. Could it? I searched Youtube, spotify, 7digital, Amazon but with no result.

Until tonight.

While finding an old Stevie Wonder song, I found that he released a kind of Greatest Hits package in 2000.  - At The Close Of A Century

I went through various songs until I found it. The song that I had been searching for. All I Do.

You’re welcome. 😉

It’s time for another pocket camera

Photography, Tech

I’ve had quite a bit of bad luck with my pocket cameras over the last year between a couple of bike crashes that busted two of them and losing another. Last year, I was excited about the new batch of cameras that were about to be unveiled including the Panasonic LX7, the Samsung EX2-F and the Canon S110. The Sony RX100 was the special option but the cost relative to the chance of it getting smashed was too big a risk for me to take. Looking with new eyes over the compact supercamera landscape, one new option has appeared and looks very interesting indeed. The Nikon Coolpix P330 has just been released in March and the initial impressions look very encouraging. It’s cheaper than most of the camera’s in its class and it has increased the size of the sensor from the previous P310 version.

DXOMark summarises that the P330 performs above its paygrade.

I think I may be tempted to give it a try.
